Twenty years ago, Nantucket summer resident Gary McCarthy walked along the Washington Street Extension while he was waiting for an order of lobsters with a friend and contemplated the possibilities for the prime real estate along the harbor.
“Some day I’m going to come down here and buy this place,” he mused.

Slowly, the concept for what would become the Great Harbor Yacht Club materialized, and when the opportunity to purchase the waterfront property that housed an aging boatyard from the Deeley family came along in 2002, he and his partner Blake Drexler jumped at the chance.
Seven years and nearly $100 million later, the Great Harbor Yacht Club opened its doors this week as Nantucket’s second private yacht club, as well as one of the most ambitious, expensive and controversial developments in the island’s history.
