Whalers win one at Mashpee Tourney

Josh Butler, the senior co-captain, notched three double-doubles in three games this week, scoring 13 points and 10 boards against Hull, 18 points and 12 rebounds against Chatham and 14 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots at Cohasset.

While many were enjoying a relaxing holiday vacation last week, the boys basketball team kept busy with a packed schedule of games. The Whalers split two games at the Mashpee Christmas Tournament, defeating Chatham 68-51 Friday before falling to Hull 49-48 Saturday. Also this week, Nantucket lost at Cohasset 52-50.


After opening the season with five straight road games, the Whalers (2-3) were scheduled to host their first home game of the season Tuesday against Norton, too late for this edition of Sports.


In the first stretch of games this season the Nantucket has been working to figure out best floor combinations and establishing roles on the team.

“We are pretty deep and I am happy about that,” head coach Beau Almodobar said of his 14-player squad. “All of our players can play. We shuffle a lot of kids in and out and that’s because of the tempo.”

Coaching Whaler pride

In 1993, athletic director Vito Capizzo was searching for a new girls basketball coach to take over for the departing John McGuiness. He pegged down former Whalers basketball player Willis Ferreira as the man he wanted for the job. The team was 1-18 the year before and Ferreira, while not immediately sold on the idea, figured he could not do much worse. ...More

Games have been hard to come by for the girls basketball team this month. In only the second clash of the season, Nantucket defeated a solid Whitinsville squad 63-40 at home Saturday to improve to 2-0. ...More

134 species spotted at Christmas Count

In spite of rain and fog Nantucket had a good Christmas Bird Count on December 27. It was warm with temperatures in the 50s and the wind was moderate out of the south west. A relief from the gale we had during the week. One hundred and 34 species were seen by 39 participants. Last year we had 130 species with over 50 participants. The grand total of individuals is 339,770. ...More
