It wasn’t even close to the best game the Whalers have played this season, but the girls varsity basketball team’s effort in Tuesday night’s sectional semifinal against South Shore Christian was enough to get the job done.

Third-seeded Nantucket, which easily and emphatically beat Westport 64-41 in a home-quarterfinal game Friday, defeated the second-seeded Warriors 55-35 on a neutral court in Sandwich to earn a trip to the Division IV South finals this weekend. The Whalers last played in the sectional finals in 2007, when they lost to Sacred Heart.

The celebration was short-lived, however, as Nantucket (21-2) earned a date with undefeated and top-ranked Cohasset (23-0). The Skippers beat the Whalers handily, 57-21, at the Cohasset Christmas Tournament in late December.
